The two most commonly used types of unique identifiers are Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs) and Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDs). They serve the same purpose of creating unique identifiers, but there are some important differences between them. This blog looks at the differences between GUIDs and UUIDs, explains whether GUIDs can solve potential problems, and explores how these identifiers are created.

Explanation of GUID and UUID

GUID (Globally Unique Identifier)

  • A GUID is a globally unique 128-bit integer.
  • It is generated using a unique combination of factors such as the current timestamp, web address and a random number.
  • GUIDs are primarily used in Windows-based systems and .NET applications.

UUID (Universally Unique Identifier)

  • A UUID is also a globally unique 128-bit identifier.
  • UUIDs follow a specific format defined by the Internet Technology Task Force (IETF) and are compatible with many different platforms.
  • They are commonly used in non-Windows environments such as Linux and macOS.

Key differences between GUID and UUID

Generation process

  • GUIDs are typically created using a combination of unique elements available on Windows-based systems, such as network addresses, timestamps, and random numbers.
  • UUIDs, on the other hand, follow a specific algorithm defined by the IETF to ensure compatibility across platforms.

Representation

  • A GUID is usually represented as a sequence of 32 hexadecimal digits grouped into five parts, each separated by a dash (e.g. 21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D).
  • UUIDs are also represented as a string of 32 hexadecimal digits, but this uses a special structure defined by the IETF (e.g. 550e800-e29b-1d-a716-66551) to represent five grouped into sections separated by a line.

Platform compatibility

  • GUIDs are primarily used in Windows-based systems and are widely supported by the .NET Framework.
  • UUID is a universally unique identifier that can be used across platforms and programming languages.

Performance and fragmentation

Generating GUIDs based on various factors, such as randomness, incurs additional computational overhead that can affect performance. Additionally, using a GUID as a primary key can cause database index fragmentation, which can affect query performance.

To address performance issues with GUIDs, some developers are considering using incremental GUIDs, also known as progressive GUIDs. Additional GUIDs create identifiers that are more likely to be consecutive, reducing index fragmentation and improving performance in certain scenarios.

CombGuid

  • CombGuid is a technique that combines the current timestamp with random numbers to create a sequence of their GUIDs.
  • This approach allows us to preserve the uniqueness of the tags while introducing some order.

Modified implementation

  • Developers can implement their algorithms to generate sequential or semi-sequential GUIDs based on their specific needs.
  • This approach gives developers more control over the generation process and allows them to customize tags to suit the needs of their applications.

Let us take a simple example of generating an incremental GUID/UUID as follows:

Do note that this implementation assumes a single instance of the IncrementalUuidGenerator is used across the distributed system. In a real distributed system, you would need to consider synchronization mechanisms like distributed locks to ensure uniqueness and consistency across multiple instances.

Now, what changes would we have to make to be able to use this in a distributed system, if such a case arises, as some type of synchronization will be required? Let’s look into a possible option with Redis:

Remember to call the Initialize method once, providing the appropriate Redis connection string, before calling the Generate method in your application. This ensures the connection to the Redis server is established.

By incorporating a distributed lock mechanism using Redis, you can ensure that multiple instances of the incremental UUID generator in a distributed system generate unique and strictly increasing UUIDs, even in a concurrent environment.
